Careers and Salaries

What’s the difference between an M.Ed. and an MAT degree?

Both are graduate level degrees that can prepare you for teacher certification and advance your career in the field of education. An M.Ed. degree may delve into more theoretical coursework that could eventually lead to careers in curriculum development, administration and leadership. On the other hand, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) provides more practical hands-on experience in classroom teaching and working more directly with students. It is ideal if you do not have an undergraduate degree in teaching but would like to make a career change or become licensed to teach.

Graduate Outcomes

  1. Curriculum design theories that are based upon philosophical, sociological and historical foundations; democratic values; student, school and community needs; guidelines of learned societies and academic standards; and changing socio-economic conditions
  2. Organizational theories that promote the school culture as a learning community including collaborative planning processes, team-building and shared best practices, and interdisciplinary curricula approaches
  3. Curriculum development processes based upon research, applied theories and informed practice including alignment of multiple curricular content areas and instructional goals and objectives; concepts of scope, sequence, balance and integration; establishment of learning outcomes; and multiple assessment techniques
  4. School organizational structures that support teaching strategies and student outcomes including class scheduling alternatives; school facilities and classroom design; diverse instructional methodologies; and infusion of technology into curriculum and instruction
  5. Designing curriculum scope and sequence
  6. Evaluating instructional methodologies and strategies
  7. Assessing instructional service delivery
